Last month, I sent my Tissot PR50 Atollo for a repair. The hands have stopped moving (even though the battery was only changed few months back), and the face plate has magically rotated. Everytime I look at the time, I’ll have to tilt my head to the side to get a right sense of time.
Recently, the shop came back to me with devastating news: The watch has been out of production for centuries, and there are no more replacement parts.
Guess it has come of age. Constant dropping of the watch might have contributed to its downfall too.
History lesson: I got this watch back in 1995, when I was 11 years old. At that point of time, I was back in Seoul for my aunt’s wedding. Her husband-to-be was this Japanese dude who’s gotta be at least 10+ years older than her, and this is the 1st time my mom’s side of the family was meeting him - 5 days before the wedding.
And I guess, in his attempts to appease us, he brought tonnes of gifts & offerings. This was when I got the watch (along with numerous other gifts such as food, clothes etc.). I liked him already. And that was the last I’ve seen of him since then. (They flew back to Tokyo right after the wedding.)
Anyway, that watch was brought back to Malaysia, deemed too “old” for Primary Year 5 me by my dad, who proceeded to wear it, with the excuse of taking care of it. Until year 2000, when I decided to reclaim what was rightly mine, and put on the bracer of authority.
All in all, I had the watch for a whopping 14 years. It has been through thick & thin, ups & downs, black & white with me. I took me through my SPM, uni years, & my 1st 2 years of working life.
That’s that on my watch. Looks like I’ll be looking for one these coming weeks.
OR.
If all my friends decide to be real nice and start pooling RM10 per day until October 4th, you’ll have RM1.1k, which can get me a pretty decent Tissot. (Yes, I’m a brand loyalist. Tissot hasn’t disappointed me just yet.)
Think about it. A decent watch will help me be on time for all my appointments with you guys, which you can’t live with.
